Are Granite & Quartz Countertops Low-Maintenance?

When it comes to the family kitchen, most homeowners who are looking to upgrade their countertops need to balance cost with style, functionality, and maintenance.

Maintenance is an essential consideration because modern-day adults are often juggling hectic schedules. Add to that everyday kitchen-related chores such as food preparation, cooking, and – most importantly – cleaning, and things can get bogged down quickly.

When it comes to materials that offer greater style and functionality choices at comparable prices, quartz and granite are the main go-to choices. But how do they stack up when it comes to maintenance?

Quartz Maintenance

Quartz can be a very attractive material for kitchen countertops. It has the look, feel, and performance of higher maintenance stone choices such as marble, which can scratch and stain quite easily, and require regular sealing.

In contrast, quartz finishes are non-porous, making it a very low-maintenance material that is easy to clean. Because the material is man-made, it is engineered to be durable, scratch-resistant, and long-lasting. Cleaning quartz is a simple job requiring nothing more than warm, soapy water or mild cleaning solutions, like these.

Granite Maintenance

Granite is also a beautiful stone material for kitchen countertops. Because the product is a naturally occurring stone, there are many shades, colors, and patterns to choose from.

Granite is also a very hard stone, which makes it resistant to scratching. Granite is also highly durable, making it perfect for families with little ones.

Granite, while less porous than marble, will still require sealing. However, it’s not difficult and when done properly, granite can be just as maintenance-free as a quartz countertop. When properly sealed, cleaning granite countertops can be as simple as its quartz counterpart, requiring nothing more than warm, soapy water or mild cleaning solutions.

And, when viewed through a financial lens, quartz or granite countertops could save a busy homeowner both time and money in the long run.

If you’re looking to replace your kitchen countertops with something that’s beautiful, stylish, and won’t demand hours of weekly attention to keep functional, you can’t go wrong with either quartz or granite.
