Can Quartz Counters Crack or Burn?

In a word: yes. However, understanding how to avoid problems is pretty simple.

Quartz slab that is manufactured for use as countertop material is created from crushed quartz and resin. Quartz is a naturally-occurring mineral and the resin holds it together. Resin does not hold up well to heat and can become brittle with extreme cold.

Sudden changes in temperature can cause the material to crack, or become discolored and warped. Manufacturers recommend always using hot pad, trivets, or cutting boards under hot pans, slow cookers, and even electric skillets. You should also be careful to not expose the counter to sudden changes in temperature, hot or cold, to protect this manufactured product. For example, don’t place a bag of ice on your counter.

Sudden impact or force on the counters can also cause them to crack. Always be careful when placing heavy objects on quartz countertops.
