Honed Quartz: The Elegant and Timeless Stone for Your Home

Quartz countertops are loved for their durability, versatility, and stylish appearance. However, when choosing a slab for your project, it’s important to consider how the finish will impact the look and feel of your final product.

Quartz comes in two options: honed or polished. Though polished is more common and well-known, honed quartz can add a gorgeous and unique touch to your space. To help you determine which finish is right for your home, the experts at Crowley’s discuss everything you need to know about honed quartz:

What is Honed Quartz?

Honed quartz is a type of quartz surface that features a matte, non-reflective finish. It’s created by processing quartz that is quarried and refined into slab form. The slabs are then “honed” with diamond abrasives before being sent to the fabrication facility. This process creates a smooth surface without shine or gloss. Many people favor honed surfaces for their sophisticated look and classic appeal, making it great for both traditional and modern designs.

Why Choose Honed Quartz?

Honed quartz is becoming an increasingly popular building material, and for good reason. With a soft and natural appearance, it can elevate any aesthetic and infuse your home with timeless elegance. Honed countertops offers a number of benefits, including:

Organic Appearance

The honing process creates a lightly textured and earthy appearance, making honed quartz a great choice for homeowners who prefer a subtle and natural aesthetic. With such a classic and consistent look, it’s no wonder why this material is becoming more and more common.

Less Glare and Reflection

Bright overhead lighting is really convenient, especially in kitchens or bathrooms. However, highly polished surfaces will reflect those bright lights right back into your face. Honed quartz gently diffuses the light to avoid such a harsh glare.

Hides Scratches and Chips

When polished quartz gets scratched or chipped, the non-polished material beneath sticks out like a sore thumb. Though honed quartz can still sustain and show damage, the matte finish better hides small blemishes.

Soft and Silky Texture

Polished quartz has a glassy and slick feel, while honed countertops are smooth and buttery to the touch. The abrasives used during the honing process add tiny hints of texture that give it a velvety texture.

Dozens of Style Options

Whatever your aesthetic is, there’s a honed quartz slab to match. Honed countertops come in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles to bring your vision to life. From unique modern looks to classic favorites, our experts can help you find the perfect slab for your design.

Caring for Honed Quartz

Gorgeous countertops are wonderful to have, especially when they’re crafted to fit your lifestyle. When choosing a material for your project, it’s important to note that honed quartz requires more daily care than polished finishes. That said, the maintenance requirements are still very manageable. To keep your honed quartz looking great, we recommend following these care guidelines:

  • Wipe away fingerprints daily: Shiny surfaces tend to hide fingerprints well because the oil from our skin blends into the sheen of the polish. Since honed quartz is matte and non-reflective, it will show fingerprints and other signs of daily wear faster than polished options. Regularly wipe down the countertops to remove smudges.
  • Use coasters, trivets, and placements: The tiny abrasions in honed quartz make the stone more porous than polished quartz, which makes it more susceptible to water stains. To avoid cup rings and marks from condensation, place coasters and other protective items down while using your countertops.
  • Avoid using too much cleaner or soap: Excess cleaner can streak or create a film on the surface of your honed quartz. Use gentle cleansers in small amounts to avoid a sudsy finish. Also avoid using abrasive cleaners or tools that can scratch the stone.
  • Clean spills immediately: Because honed quartz is more porous, it holds onto moisture more than polished options. If water or other substances are able to sit on the surface for long, they can cause discoloration or stubborn stains. Wipe away splashes, drips, and spills as quickly as possible.
